European Coal and Steel Community (1951 with the Treaty of Paris)
France, German Federal Republic, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg This six countries are able to share and use steel and coal of any member state
European Economic Community (1957 with the Treaty of Rome)
Common market, less duties and free movement of capital
In the 1973 the United Kingdom also joined the European Economic Community, matter many years of discussions
The United Kingdom had previously applied twice to join the community. France with the President Charles de Goal twice denied his request.
In the 1989 the German Federal Republic (bone was the capital) was united with the democratic Germany (Berlin is the capital).
Schengen Agreement (1985)
It abolished border controls for people who can circulate freely in the area called Schengen zone
Today the Schengen area includes almost all EU countries and four non-EU countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland).
Maastricht treaty (1992)
The EEC is transformed to EU and the concept of European citizenship is introduced
Europeans have the right to live, work and vote in any EU country. It establishes the free movement of products and services. It also established the European Central Bank.
