1973 Britan and the EU
The UK with Ireland and Denmark, joins the EEC (from six nations to nine).
1975
Margaret Thatcher, helps win the day for the EEC in the UK’s first referendum on Europe.
Margaret Thatcher becomes Prime Minister in 1979. Demands money back which she gave to the EEC (Economic European Community).
The first European parliamentary election.
They nicknamed her “Iron Lady.”
1978
European Council enstablishes the first precursor to the euro (ECU) never entered into circulation
1983
British unemployment rises and Thatcher is re-elected
A year later (1984), due to several strikes by miners, the mines in the UK will be closed (they were essential for the economy)
1990
Thatcher is deposed and replaced by John Major.
1997
Tony Blair became prime minister. Unlike all the pretender ministers, he was pro-Europe and put an end to tensions between the United Kingdom and the European Union.
2002
The euro becomes the common currency in only 12 countries (with the exception of Denmark and the UK)
2006
Nigel Farage is the one who becomes the head of EKIP, a party that had the aim of having independence and leaving the EU. He was also a member of the European parliament.
2013
David Cameron becomes prime minister.
He is the one who calls the referendum to decide whether to stay or leave the EU (even though he was under pressure from UKIP).
When the referendum voted to leave the EU in 2016, David Cameron resigned.
2016
The referendum votes say to leave the EU.
2019
Boris Johnson will take all steps to leave the EU.
