Brexit
In 2015, British Prime Minister David Cameron announced a referendum on whether the United Kingdom would remain in the European Union.
In 2016, the referendum was held and the majority voted for the UK to leave the EU.
After three years of negotiations, in 2019, the UK and the EU reached an agreement on Brexit.
The UK left the EU on 31 January 2020, but agreed to a transition period until 2021.
In 2020, a trade agreement was negotiated to allow tariff-free trade of goods and services after this transition period.
The agreement was finally reached at the last minute, on December 24, 2020, and came into force on January 1, 2021.
