The European Parliament
Has 705 members elected every five years by citizens of the member states in proportion to the size of their population
In 2024 they will become 720 due to demographic changes in EU countries
Is the only institution that represents the citizens of EU
Is chaired by a President who is elected every 2.5 years

Meets in Strasbourg (France) 12 sessions a year and in Brussels (Belgium) up to 6 times a year
It debates and passes European laws with the Council
It scrutinises other EU institutions to make sure they are working democratically
It debates and adopts the EU’s budget
